Week 2 - Activity - Plaster Casting

So for this weeks activity we did Plaster Castings of our hands or feet. I chose to do my hand, sadly I was not able to be at the meet up due to being at work during the time! However I did make two TikTok’s showing the whole process of me making my paster molds.

  • How did it go?

I think the overall concept is amazing and so creative, gathering the tools and items that I needed was simple enough and it felt nice to go to the beach to gather the sand. My hand did not turn out how I thought it would however I feel like it was still a cute little project, if I were to do it again I would pour softer so that I didn’t make a big blob on the palm of my hand. As for my favorite part, the dog paws, I love everything about them. In my Part 2 video I do say I wished I have tapped out the air bubbles but in reality it shows the fun I had doing it and the imperfectness of art.

  • Have you done something like this before?

I have never done something like this before! I have worked with plaster but in a more constructive way, patching holes in walls. This was so interesting to try and I found it to be incredibly easy and stress relieving.

  • Can you think of ways to apply or adapt it to other activities in your life?

A way to adapt this activity into life if to create pieces for a garden. By using different materials to create the mold I think the piece would lack the grittiness of the sand. In a garden I could put two hands together holding a bowl as the mold. As after the plaster hardens there will be a beautiful bird bath, pot, or serving dish (if refinished). My neighbor actual has cowboy boots that she molded and then poured plaster into it and they are the cutest most unique flower pots I have seen and I love them so much. Another way in which I can use Plaster Casting in my life is to create doorstops, canvas work, and of course molding and sculpting really anything that I can.

  • What would you try next time?

Hmmm. Something I would try next time is maybe coasters which I can resin pour over and make my own coasters. Another idea is to replicate leaves or shells in my area. Huntington Beach and Newport Beach have some awesome shells as well a huge leaves during certain times of the year. It would be really fun to mold my hand again but with a smoother molding agent. It reminds me of the wax hands they used to make at the Sawdust festival in Laguna.

Below I attached my two videos of the Plaster Casting!!!

Enjoy
