Lynsey Addario’s work is based on photojournalism with an emphasis on human rights. She aims to show women’s rights through pictures in more traditional areas. Her work is sentimental and deep rooted, many of her photos depict women in their traditional garments sitting or standing looking deeply into the camera. Pain and anguish seen behind their eyes. Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller’s work explores sound in different ways. Rather than using people to tell a story Cardiff and Miller use ASMR like sounds. Addario’s work and Cardiff-Miller’s work are similar because they both use grand forms of art. Lynsey risks her life and the lives of the women she is photographing to capture their beauty and inner self while Cardiff-Miller produces multiverse sound on such a grand scale. Not worrying about how large a piece is or how abstract it is. I think their work is different because Cardiff-Miller uses inanimate objects while Addario primarily works with humans. I think that without the whimsy and inner-monologues of the world the tough gritty side can become too overwhelming. Whimsy is amusing for most but I feel like Addario’s work needs to be seen and understood. We as citizens of the U.S. often think we may have it bad but looking and hearing the story of the women Addario’s captures can bring our lives into perspective. I would prefer a career like Addario’s because I find it to be so interesting to capture something so deep and impactful with a handful of photos. I feel the emotion of the person I see in the photo. I ache for the woman with no nose and wonder what got her in this place. I did enjoy learning about Cardiff-Millers form of art but I could not see myself doing something like this.
